Braden Gellenthien Wins Gold, Anna Stratton Takes Bronze at World University Archery Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Approximately 165 participants from 25 countries gathered in Vinicne, Slovakia to compete at the 6th World University Archery Championships this week, with James Madison University’s Braden Gellenthien (Hudson, Mass.) winning the individual gold medal for the U.S. in the men’s compound category and Texas A&M University’s Anna Stratton (Magnolia, Texas) taking the bronze for the compound women.

For the compound men, Gellenthien beat Italy’s Sergio Pagni easily 117-110 in the finals to take home the gold. Gellenthien’s JMU teammate Stephen Schwade (Summerville, S.C.) made it all the way to the quarterfinals before falling to Pagni 114-114 in a tie-breaking shoot-off. Josh Binger (Monroe, Wisc./Texas A&M University) had a good run until the quarterfinals where he was defeated by France’s Sebastien Brasseur 117-115. Brasseur went on to claim the bronze medal in the men’s compound category. Binger ended the competition in 5th place while Schwade took sixth place overall.

The U.S. Compound women had a very successful showing in the individual competition. Stratton won the bronze medal after a tie-breaking shoot-off in her final match against Slovenia’s Maja Marcen. Stratton’s Texas A&M teammate Amanda Raffaelli (Bartonville, Texas) and James Madison University’s Brittany Lorenti (Trumbull, Conn.) advanced all the way to the 1/8 round before being eliminated. Raffaelli finished the individual competition in 9th place and Lorenti finished right behind her in the 10th spot. France’s Amandine Bouillot took the gold for the compound women and Korea’s Hyo Sun Kim won the bronze.

All three members of the U.S. men’s recurve team were eliminated in the 1/16 elimination round. Atlantic Cape Community College’s Brett Lazaroff (Bayside, N.Y.) fell 113-107 to China’s Shenzhou Zhao. Dakota Sinclair (Ridgecrest, Calif./Saddleback College) faced Chinese Taipei’s Ming-Huang Liu in the 1/16 round and lost the match 113-106. Jacob Wukie (Oak Harbor, Ohio/James Madison University) fell to Cheng-Wei Kuo (Chinese Taipei) 107-103. Lazaroff finished in 17th place overall, while Sinclair took the 20th spot and Wukie finished 25th. Jong Young Lee from Korea took the gold in the men’s recurve category, while Kuo won the silver and Ukraine’s Yaroslav Mokrynsky claimed the bronze.

Arizona State University’s Lindsay Pian (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had the best showing for the U.S. recurve women, advancing to the 1/16 round before being eliminated by Indonesia’s Rina Dewi Puspita Sari in a close 107-106 match. Pian finished the competition in 17th place overall. Cal State Long Beach’s Carissa Dragan (Moorpark, Calif.) also made it to the 1/16 round before losing to Poland’s Justyna Mospinek 107-98. Lindsey Carmichael (Lago Vista, Calif./University of Texas), a 2004 Paralympian, fell in the first round to Alla Arinina (Ukraine) 96-88. Dragan and Carmichael finished in 25th and 36th place respectively. Hiroko Taguma (Japan) won the gold for women’s recurve, Ukraine’s Kateryna Ksenofontova took the silver and Mospinek won the bronze.
